Meet Sam

HONEST, EFFECTIVE, LEADERSHIP

Born and raised in Knoxville, TN. Sam along with his two brothers Reginald and Raleigh attended public schools and are proud graduates of Austin-East High School. Sam went on to attend Fisk University earning a B.S. in Physics and obtained his M.S. in Solid State Physics from the University of Memphis. Sam is a life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Sam returned to Knoxville after college to start his 30+ year career at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Sam has been involved in the community for many years in various capacities and serves on numerous boards.

Sam enjoys officiating football at high school and collegiate levels and worked championship games at both levels.

Sam is a proud husband, father and grandfather. Sam and his wife have a blended family of 6 children. He attends Foster Chapel Baptist Church.

Civic & Community Activities

Sam is a “servant leader” with a heart for his community and the 15th District.

Sam was elected to Knox County Commission in 2008 and served for 8 ½ years. During his time as County Commissioner Sam advocated for quality education for all children and served as Chair of the Joint Education Committee with the County School Board.

He also fought for continued funding for the Beck Cultural Center to ensure African American History in Knoxville is preserved. Sam also fought against regressive sales tax increase in Knox County.

Sam currently serves as a Board Member for ORNL Federal Credit Union which is a 2.5-billion-dollar financial institution; Board Member for Town Hall East (THE) Neighborhood Association, Tennova Metro Health Systems and is the KY/TN District Representative for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

A signature program for the Knoxville Chapter is the Lamp Lighters, a yearlong mentorship for 5th Grade Boys at Sarah Moore Greene Elementary School. Sam gives hands on science demonstrations to the students and helps to lead a “Breakfast with Champions” motivational day as well. He also volunteers with YoSTEM Science program at Vine Middle Magnet School.
